Jason V Brock

Jason in Ray Bradbury’s basement.

Jason V Brock is a critically acclaimed and award-winning writer, editor, artist, composer, and filmmaker. Originally from Charlotte, NC, Brock has traveled expansively, living in Seattle, Los Angeles and the Portland, OR area, but he feels most at home in Europe (Firenze, Praha, Paris, and Wien). He is a liberal and an atheist with Hindu and Buddhist leanings.

His wife and soulmate, Sunni K Brock, live with their reptile brood in Vancouver, WA.

Their interests are varied and include astrology, reading, vegetarianism/animal rights/health, herptiles, computers, science, psychology, virology, movies and music — especially 1970s-era Prog Rock: Yes, Goblin, Rush, King Crimson, [early] Genesis, and others. They have eclectic tastes, however, and, in addition to most Classical, Swing, Metal, Noise/Industrial, Bluegrass, Film Soundtracks, and Jazz. They also adore David Bowie, The Beatles, Paul Simon, Naked City/John Zorn, Mahavishnu, Chrome, Last Exit, The Clash, and NoMeansNo, to name but a few. (As guitarist/singer/writer for his bands, ChiaroscurO and Graft, Jason played live extensively, compiling a large selection of original musical material: more than 80 songs/improvisations. His compositions are often complex, dark and heavy, using exotic instrumentation, a “schizoid mixture of melodious hooks and avant-garde structure” as described by Creative Loafing reviewer Fred Mills. He now performs his own film soundtracks.)

They are the producers of multiple documentaries (all directed/written by Jason and edited by Sunni): The AckerMonster Chronicles! about agent and super-fan Forrest J Ackerman, which includes interviews with Ray Harryhausen, Dan O’Bannon, Joe Dante, John Landis, et al. Charles Beaumont: The Short Life of Twilight Zone’s Magic Man (an overview of the life of the late Twilight Zone scribe) showcases (among others) Ray Bradbury, William F. Nolan, George Clayton Johnson, Harlan Ellison, and Richard Matheson. Image, Reflection, Shadow: Artists of the Phantastique (about the use of dark imagery throughout history) features H. R. Giger, Ernst Fuchs, Roger Dean, Robert Williams, Viktor Safonkin, and more of the greatest artists from the recent past.

The duos principal literary influences include: Borges, Lovecraft, Kafka, Serling, Chayefsky, Bataille, Faulkner, Vonnegut, Barth, Burroughs, Gabriel García Márquez, J. G. Ballard, Orwell, Arthur Miller, Shakespeare, Dante, Shelley, Homer, Poe, Robbe-Grillet, Richard Selzer, and the “Southern California Writing School” (Nolan, Beaumont, Johnson, Matheson, Tomerlin, Bradbury, et al). Jason’s art/poetry book, Totems and Taboos, was published in 2005 to excellent reviews. His fiction and nonfiction have also been published in S. T. Joshi’s Black Wings series, The Bleeding Edge: Dark Barriers, Dark Frontiers (which he co-edited with his friend the late William F. Nolan)The Devil’s Coattails: More Dispatches from the Dark FrontierCalliope, Ethereal Tales (UK)Paul Kane’s Shadow Writer (UK; Guest Writer for September, 2011), Centipede Press’s The Weird Fiction Review (print edition), Logan’s Run: Last Day (from Bluewater Comics), Dark Discoveries (where he served as Managing Editor and Art Director for over four years) and in the Hurricane Katrina/Animal Rescue charity anthology Animal Magnetism, in which he was the featured poet. Sunni has been featured in the online edition of Cemetery Dance and multiple other venues.

Jason has had several gallery showings of his art/photography (he is an expert in photographic technology), and counts Bosch, Brueghel, Michelangelo, Wrightson, Fuchs, Botticelli, Wolfgang Grässe, Dalí, Beksiński, Böcklin, Vesalius, the EC Comics stable of artists, Francis Bacon, Minor White, and Helmut Newton within his myriad inspirations. His graphic design background was well utilized when he worked for Morris Costumes, assisting with their enormous product catalog. His photos/artwork/graphic design have also appeared in Dark DiscoveriesThe Bleeding Edge, The Devil’s Coattails, Charlotte Magazine, Charlotte Spectrum Magazine, and others, and he was the featured artist in A Darker Vision (Australia) for five months in a row.

Both Brocks are currently deep in the production of books (via Cycatrix Press), CDs, DVDs, [NameL3ss] Digest (a annual publication in print, e-book, and online), screenplays, and novels.
